Whispers of the Darkness
James explains the Darkness's relentless assault and its search for the notebook's secrets. The group learns the stakes are higher than they imagined for all of New Jersey.
The air in the basement was thick with the scent of damp earth and forgotten things, a stark contrast to the hushed, reverent atmosphere of the Church of the Halo Armor of Jesus. Maverick, still reeling from the bewildering events that had propelled him from graduation to this subterranean chamber, found himself standing beside Merrick, who was now clad in a shimmering, cerulean armor that seemed to hum with an inner light. James Trent Williams, the man who had so casually ripped open reality to bring them here, stood before them, his weathered face a mask of calm amidst their disquiet. Beside him, Liz Bennett, her own armor a warm, golden hue, offered a reassuring presence.
“The Darkness,” James began, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very foundations of the building, “is not merely an invading force. It is a hunger. A void that seeks to consume everything in its path. And its primary objective, its insatiable desire, is this notebook.” He gestured towards the worn leather-bound volume that had, moments ago, bestowed upon Merrick her own divine covering. “Within its pages lie not just maps, but the very essence of the Armor of Legends. It is the key to their awakening, and therefore, the key to their potential undoing.”
Maverick swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. The red armor that still clung to him, a comforting yet alien presence, felt heavier now. He had graduated, received a mysterious gift, and been thrust into a battle he couldn't comprehend. “But… why us?” he finally managed to ask, his voice a little shaky. “Why this armor?”
