In the basement, the notebook glows, revealing a chest. Merrick is enveloped in blue Holy Spirit armor, surprising James. A new portal brings more armored figures.
The air in the basement hung thick and still, a stark contrast to the chaotic energy that had moments before erupted within the sanctuary of the Church of the Halo Armor of Jesus. Maverick, still reeling from the sudden, almost violent transition, found himself blinking in the dim light, the afterimage of a swirling, emerald portal still dancing behind his eyes. Beside him, Merrick Lee Franklin, her usual composure ruffled but her eyes sharp with a mixture of confusion and defiance, stood rigidly. The old man, James Trent Williams, his face a roadmap of unspoken stories, surveyed the scene with a quiet intensity.
Then, it happened. A soft hum emanated from the worn leather notebook clutched in Maverick’s hands. It wasn’t the frantic pulse of the earlier transformation, but a steady, resonant thrum that vibrated through his very bones. A beam of light, pure and incandescent, shot from the center of the notebook, striking a dusty wooden chest that sat innocently on a nearby shelf. The wood, aged and scarred, seemed to absorb the light, glowing with an inner luminescence.
Merrick, her gaze fixed on the chest, took an involuntary step forward. The beam had ceased, but a faint aura still shimmered around the object. It was as if the notebook had awakened something dormant within it. Without conscious thought, drawn by an unseen force, Merrick reached out and lifted the lid.
