Chapter 17
Confrontation at Sandy Hook
A major battle ensues at Sandy Hook. The heroes face a powerful lieutenant of the Darkness, risking everything to secure a vital piece of the puzzle.
The salt-laced wind whipped Maverick’s crimson armor, a stark contrast to the muted blues and whites of Merrick’s prayer-infused garb. They stood on the windswept dunes of Sandy Hook, the vast expanse of the Atlantic a shimmering, indifferent canvas behind them. The air thrummed with an unnatural stillness, a heavy silence that spoke of impending doom rather than peaceful repose. The notebook, clutched tight in Maverick’s gauntleted hand, felt like a beacon, its weight a constant reminder of the immense responsibility now resting upon his young shoulders. “This is it,” James’s voice was a low rumble, barely audible above the sigh of the waves. “The lieutenant. He’s been consolidating their forces here, guarding something vital.”
Maverick scanned the desolate landscape. Twisted, skeletal remnants of trees clawed at the bruised sky, and the sand itself seemed to hold a sickly, unnatural hue. This was no longer the Jersey he knew, the vibrant state he’d grown up in. This was a land scarred by a creeping blight, where the very essence of life seemed to be draining away.
