The air in the subterranean chamber hung thick and still, a stark contrast to the violent energy that had preceded their arrival. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of light that pierced the gloom from a crack in the ceiling, illuminating the rough-hewn stone walls and the scattered crates that lined them. James Trent Williams, his face a roadmap of weathered lines, gestured with a practiced hand. “Welcome,” he began, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very foundations of the hidden space, “to a place of refuge. With a hesitant hand, she lifted the lid, revealing not treasures, but what appeared to be a simple, tarnished silver cross. As her fingers brushed against the cool metal, the light from the notebook pulsed again, this time bathing Merrick in a glorious, celestial blue. The armor of the Holy Spirit materialized around her, as radiant and complete as the one that had briefly adorned Maverick.
