The air in the basement was thick with an unspoken tension, a palpable hum that vibrated against Maverick’s skin long after the portal had sealed itself shut. James Trent Williams, his face a roadmap of quiet wisdom, surveyed the small space with a practiced eye. Beside him, Liz Bennett, her presence a calming anchor, offered a gentle smile to Merrick, who still looked a touch bewildered, the ethereal blue armor clinging to her like a second skin. Maverick, the fiery red armor a stark contrast to the dim surroundings, felt a surge of apprehension mingle with a nascent sense of purpose. The notebook, now closed and resting on his lap, felt heavier than any textbook he’d ever carried.

“This,” James began, his voice resonating with a calm authority, “is merely a temporary sanctuary. The Darkness, as you’ve no doubt experienced, is far-reaching. We must move, and quickly.” He gestured towards a worn wooden staircase leading upwards. “There are whispers, you see. Old legends stirring. And in this state, with the armor awakened, you are more attuned to such things than you realize.”

Merrick, her gaze still fixed on the faint outline of the chest where her armor had appeared, finally spoke, her voice laced with a newfound steadiness. “Whispers of what, exactly?”
