The Delaware River, a ribbon of steely grey under a bruised sky, stretched out before them, a vast, indifferent expanse. Chloe Xavier, her gaze fixed on the churning water, felt a familiar prickle of unease crawl up her spine. It wasn’t the river itself, though its breadth was a formidable barrier. It was the air, thick and heavy, pregnant with an unspoken threat that mirrored the turbulence in her own gut. He was still getting used to the idea that this was a chase, a real one, with stakes higher than he could have ever imagined.
