The Gathering at the Shore

The salt-laced wind whipped Maverick’s hair across his eyes as he squinted at the vast expanse of the Atlantic. It was a sight he’d seen a thousand times, the endless blue stretching to meet the equally endless sky, but today, it felt different. Today, the ocean seemed to hold its breath, a silent witness to the shift that had rippled through his ordinary life. He stood on the weathered boardwalk of Asbury Park, the iconic carousel a silent sentinel behind him, its painted horses frozen in mid-gallop. Merrick Lee Franklin, a woman whose quiet strength seemed to radiate from her like an inner sun, had instructed him to meet her here, at a place she called a nexus of energy.

Beside him, fidgeting with the hem of her light jacket, was Chloe Xavier. Maverick still couldn't quite wrap his head around her. One moment she was a classmate, sharp and observant, the next, a force of nature capable of conjuring gusts of wind that could peel paint from a barn. Her eyes, usually so focused and analytical, darted nervously towards the horizon.

"She said she’d be here," Chloe murmured, her voice barely audible above the surf. "This… this whole thing is still a lot to take in, Maverick."
