The air in Somerset County, usually crisp with the scent of pine and distant farmland, had taken on a peculiar stillness. It was a stillness that hummed with an unseen tension, a prelude to a storm that had nothing to do with the capricious New Jersey weather. Maverick Smith Bernard, still reeling from the inexplicable surge of energy that had pulsed through him at the old mill, felt it deep in his bones. He’d dismissed the strange warmth in his grandfather’s pocket watch as a fluke, a trick of the fading light or maybe just a faulty mechanism. But the unease that clung to him now was far more potent, far more real.

He found himself drawn to the faded pages of a local history book, its brittle leaves whispering tales of forgotten ironworks and the families who had shaped the county. His fingers traced the faded ink, a familiar pull guiding him to a passage about the early ironmasters, men of grit and ingenuity who had forged the very foundations of their community. A chill snaked down his spine as he read about the Bernard family, his own ancestors, renowned for their skill in metalwork and their quiet prosperity. There was a particular mention of Elias Bernard, a name that resonated with a faint, almost forgotten echo in his mind, a man said to have possessed a “preternatural understanding of the earth’s molten heart.”

Later that week, while tinkering with a stubborn generator at the local community center – a knack he’d always had, an intuitive grasp of how things worked – the stillness outside shattered. A guttural roar ripped through the quiet afternoon, followed by the sickening crunch of metal. Panic erupted. A delivery truck, its brakes apparently failed, was careening down Main Street, scattering pedestrians and heading directly for the town square’s iconic gazebo, a beloved landmark that had stood for generations.
