Chapter 19
A Vigilant Peace
Life resumes its normal rhythm, yet a subtle awareness permeates the state. The heroes watch, listen, and train, forever changed by their experience, ready for the next whisper of danger that might threaten their beloved New Jersey.
The quiet that settled over New Jersey after the dramatic confrontation at Liberty State Park wasn't the deafening silence of absence, but the hushed breath of anticipation. Life, as it always did, resumed its familiar rhythm. Maverick Smith Bernard found himself staring at the battered, brass-plated compass that now rested on his workbench. It was the same compass that had, mere weeks ago, pulsed with an impossible light, guiding him through a maelstrom of forgotten history and nascent power. He’d meticulously cleaned it, buffed its tarnished surface until it gleamed, and yet, it remained a silent enigma. The workshop, once a sanctuary of familiar gears and oily rags, now felt charged with an unseen energy. He’d returned to his quiet street in Morris County, the familiar scent of freshly cut grass and blooming roses a stark contrast to the acrid smell of Alex Bellweather’s corrupted magic. His parents, thankfully oblivious to the true nature of the ‘severe electrical storm’ that had temporarily disrupted the county’s power grid (and, coincidentally, awakened Maverick’s latent abilities), had simply been relieved he was safe. He’d spun a tale of being caught at the local library during the blackout, a story so mundane it felt like a betrayal of the extraordinary events he’d witnessed.
