The digital ether crackled, a wildfire of pixels and hot takes ignited by the inferno that had erupted on stage in Omaha. What had begun as a disgruntled grumble from a grumpy old puppet had, in the span of a few hours, become the internet’s newest obsession. Clips of Walter, his plastic lips curled in a permanent sneer, refusing to deliver a punchline about a particularly unflattering celebrity impression, followed by Jeff’s increasingly flustered attempts to coax him into compliance, were replaying on an endless loop.
“He’s just a puppet!” one headline screamed, accompanied by a screenshot of Walter’s defiant glare.
“Is this Jeff Dunham’s midlife crisis, or his puppet’s?” another pondered, featuring a zoomed-in shot of Jeff’s sweating brow.
