Chapter 4
Whispers of the Blight
The blight's influence grows, making the woods more treacherous. Jason faces his fears, relying on his wit and the trees' guidance to navigate the darkening paths and uncover the artifact's location.
The air in the Whispering Woods had changed. It was no longer the same gentle, invigorating breath that had first drawn Jason into its embrace. Now, a subtle chill, not of the changing seasons but of something deeper, permeated the ancient trees. The leaves, once vibrant and full of life, seemed to droop, their edges tinged with an unnatural dullness. A silence, heavier than any Jason had ever known, had begun to creep in, muffling the usual symphony of chirps, rustles, and the soft murmur of the wind.
Elder Willow, her bark etched with the wisdom of centuries, had explained it with a sorrow that resonated through Jason’s very bones. "The Blight, little one," she had whispered, her voice like the sigh of a dying breeze, "it is a shadow that feeds on life. It leaches the color, the song, the very spirit from our leaves, our roots, our hearts."
Jason felt a clench in his own heart. He had seen it, too. Patches of moss that had once glowed with an emerald luminescence were now a sickly, faded brown. Fungi, usually bursting with vibrant hues, looked brittle and lifeless. Even the sunlight, which had filtered through the canopy in dappled, golden shafts, now struggled to penetrate, casting long, distorted shadows that seemed to writhe with an unseen malevolence.
