Ren sat on the edge of his futon, the smooth, cool wood beneath his palms a stark contrast to the turmoil churning within him. Before him, on the low wooden table, lay the object. It was no longer just a strange, carved stone; it pulsed with a soft, inner light, a gentle luminescence that seemed to breathe with a life of its own. The runes etched into its surface, once merely intriguing patterns, now shimmered with an almost ethereal glow, whispering secrets only his blood could understand.

Kantio stood by the window, his broad shoulders set, his gaze fixed on the darkening sky outside, though Ren suspected he wasn’t truly seeing the familiar silhouette of the distant mountains. Yoko, usually a whirlwind of chatter and bright laughter, was curled beside Ren, her small hand resting on his knee, a silent anchor in the storm. Her wide, innocent eyes, usually so full of questions, were now filled with a quiet understanding, a depth that belied her years.

"Guardians," Ren murmured the word, tasting its weight on his tongue. It felt foreign, a mantle he had never imagined could be his. He, Ren, whose days were filled with the mundane rhythm of family, of ensuring Kantio had enough to eat, of tucking Yoko into bed with stories of brave knights and faraway lands. He was Ren, the handsome one, the one who sometimes felt a pang of longing for something more, something he couldn't quite name. But a guardian? Of a realm he hadn't known existed until a few days ago?
