His eyes, the color of a summer sky before a storm, held a deep, abiding sadness, a reflection of the curse that had stolen his kingdom and his joy. She had faced the ogre’s terrifying presence with a bravery that belied her size, her quick wit and unwavering resolve a stark contrast to the fear that usually paralyzed those who stumbled into this cursed realm.

“You are not like the others,” Valerius said, his voice a low murmur, like the rustling of leaves in a forgotten forest. He sat on a stone bench, carved with symbols that Jane couldn't decipher, his gaze fixed on the intricate patterns of the flagstones beneath his worn boots.
