Jane’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the oppressive silence of the ogre’s castle. Each stone of the fortress seemed to emanate a chill that seeped into her very bones, a testament to the darkness that dwelled within. She’d crept through cavernous halls, her footsteps muffled by thick, dust-laden tapestries depicting scenes of ogreish triumph and human misery. The air was heavy with the scent of stale meat and something acrid, like burnt hair, a constant reminder of the ogre’s monstrous presence.

She rounded a corner, her breath catching in her throat. Before her lay a chamber, grander than any she had yet seen, yet strangely devoid of the ogre’s usual boisterous clutter. Moonlight streamed through a high, arched window, illuminating a single figure seated on a stone bench. He was unlike anyone she had ever imagined. His hair, the colour of spun gold, fell in soft waves around a face that was carved with a sculptor’s precision. His eyes, the deep blue of a twilight sky, were downcast, and a profound sadness seemed to cling to him like a shroud. He wore garments of rich velvet, now faded and worn, yet they could not diminish the inherent nobility that radiated from him.

Jane, usually quick-witted and unafraid, found herself rooted to the spot, mesmerized. This was no ogre. This was a prince, a creature of myth and legend, trapped in this dreadful place. He looked up as she entered, his expression shifting from melancholy to surprise, then to a flicker of something akin to hope.
