Dust motes danced in the slivers of late afternoon sun that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating the hushed tableau. Detective Miles Corbin stood at the polished oak table, his gaze fixed on the faded photograph spread before him. It was a grainy, black-and-white image, capturing a group of stern-faced men and women in stiff collars and long dresses, their expressions a mixture of stoic endurance and something far more unsettling. Eleanor Vance, her thin frame a fragile silhouette against the towering bookshelves, pointed a trembling finger at one of the faces.

Miles followed her finger. The man in the photograph was gaunt, his eyes sunk deep in their sockets, giving him a perpetually weary look. It was the same weariness Miles saw reflected in his own mirror most mornings. And now, here it was, staring back at him from the past, a ghost made manifest in sepia tones.
