The air in the old mill was thick with the scent of decay and something else, something metallic and cloying that Miles couldn’t quite place. Dust motes danced in the few slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating a scene of desperate stillness. He moved with the quiet tread of a hunter, his hand resting on the worn grip of his service weapon. Every creak of the floorboards, every whisper of the wind outside, felt amplified, a prelude to the inevitable clash.

He’d followed the trail here, a tangled web woven from Sarah’s fragmented memories, Eleanor’s hushed historical accounts, and Sheriff Brody Hayes’s increasingly transparent attempts to steer him away. The ‘Weeping Willow’ legend, once a quaint piece of local folklore, had morphed into a chillingly effective cloak for a very human predator. Brody, the self-appointed guardian of Oakhaven’s reputation, had been too eager to dismiss the disappearances, too quick to offer convenient, if implausible, explanations. Miles, however, had learned long ago that the most dangerous monsters often wore the most ordinary faces.

A faint rustling sound drew his attention to a shadowed alcove. He raised his weapon, his heart a steady drum against his ribs. “Brody,” he called out, his voice a low rumble that seemed to absorb the silence. “It’s over. I know it was you.”
