Kael, his senses sharper than any hawk’s, suddenly halted. His hand shot out, a silent signal for Elara to stop. He scanned the dense foliage ahead, his brow furrowed with a familiar tension. “Someone’s coming,” he murmured, his voice barely a whisper, yet it carried the weight of a shouted warning. “And they’re not here for a friendly chat.”

Elara’s heart gave a lurch. Silas. The name, unbidden, flashed through her mind. The memory of his sneering face, the glint of avarice in his eyes, sent a shiver of dread through her. She looked at the map, then at the dense trees that would soon give way to the clearing they sought. They had outmaneuvered him before, using the terrain and their wits, but Silas was a persistent shadow, a predator who never gave up the hunt.
