Chapter 9
Art and Absence
Maya begins her journey in London, surrounded by art but haunted by Leo's absence. She navigates her new life, the question of 'alright' echoing in her mind.
The air in London was a symphony of unfamiliar sounds, a constant hum of traffic and distant sirens that vibrated through the soles of my worn boots. It was a stark contrast to the hushed rhythm of Oakhaven, where the loudest noise was often the sigh of the ocean against the shore. I stood in the middle of my tiny studio apartment, a space that was meant to be my sanctuary, my launching pad, but instead felt like a gilded cage. Canvases leaned against the walls, pristine and untouched, a silent accusation. The smell of turpentine and linseed oil, once an intoxicating promise, now hung heavy and cloying.
This was it. London. The city of dreams, the mecca for artists, the place I had whispered about in hushed tones to Leo on our rooftop, the place that had felt as distant and impossible as the moon. Now, it was real. The scholarship, a golden ticket, had been real. And my rejection of it, a cowardly act of self-sabotage, had been real too, until Leo, with his quiet, devastating understanding, had changed everything.
He had stood there, on the bluff overlooking the churning grey sea, the wind whipping his dark hair around his face, and he had said, "You have to go, Maya." His voice had been rough, strained, like a rope pulled too taut. He hadn't accused, hadn't pleaded. He had simply stated a truth that had been staring us both in the face for months. He had seen the rejection letter, crumpled and tear-stained in my bin, and he had seen through my flimsy excuses. He had known, with a certainty that both broke and mended my heart, that I was using his Oakhaven tether as an excuse to stay, to avoid the terrifying prospect of a life without him.
