The salt-laced wind always carried whispers of the sea, a constant lullaby to Oakhaven, and to us. It was a sound so ingrained in my memory that even now, miles away, closing my eyes can bring it rushing back, a tidal wave of recollections. I remember the way it tangled in Maya’s hair, a wild halo of dark curls, as we’d scramble over the tide pools, our laughter echoing against the grey cliffs. We were small then, barely able to see over the weathered wooden railings of the boardwalk, but the world felt vast and full of promise, a canvas waiting for our clumsy, eager hands.

There was the summer we built a fort in the woods behind her house, a ramshackle affair of fallen branches and discarded tarps. We’d spend hours in there, the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves, whispering secrets and conjuring fantastical creatures from the rustling undergrowth. Maya, with her boundless imagination, would sketch them in the dirt with a stick, her brow furrowed in concentration, while I, ever the pragmatist, would try to find logical explanations for the strange shapes and shadows. "That's a griffin, Leo," she’d insist, her eyes bright with conviction. "See? It has the wings of an eagle and the body of a lion." And I, wanting to believe in her world as much as she did, would nod, tracing the imaginary outline with my finger.

Then there were the nights, after the accident, when the silence in our homes became a heavy shroud. The laughter that used to spill out onto the street was replaced by a quiet, almost reverent hush. It was then, more than ever, that we found each other. Our families, fractured and adrift, had left us to navigate the new, desolate landscape on our own. But we had each other. We’d meet on the rooftop of my grandfather’s house, the shingles cool beneath our bare feet, the vast expanse of stars spread out above us like a spilled box of diamonds.
