The salt spray was a familiar kiss on my face, a ghost of countless evenings spent here, perched on the weathered planks of the old pier. The tide was low, exposing slick, dark rocks that glinted like obsidian under the sliver of moon. It was our place, Leo’s and mine, a sanctuary carved out of the Oakhaven coastline. Tonight, though, the air thrummed with a different kind of electricity, a tension that had been building for weeks, a storm brewing just beneath the surface of our carefully constructed calm.

I’d found him sitting at the very end of the pier, his back to me, silhouetted against the bruised purple of the twilight sky. He looked smaller somehow, his shoulders hunched, the familiar weight of responsibility pressing down on him even here, in our secret world. I walked towards him, my footsteps soft on the damp wood, each one a hesitant beat in the symphony of my own fear.

“Leo?” My voice was barely a whisper, swallowed by the vastness of the ocean and the even vaster chasm that had opened between us.
