The sea air, usually a balm, felt heavy and suffocating in my lungs. Each salty breath was a reminder of Oakhaven, of the life I was tethered to, and the life Maya deserved, a life that stretched far beyond these familiar, damp shores. The knowledge of her secret, the rejection letter tucked away like a guilty confession, had settled in my gut like a cold stone. It wasn't the betrayal I’d initially feared, but a deeper, more insidious truth: I was her anchor, yes, but also her chain. And seeing that realization dawn on her face, the flicker of panic followed by a desperate attempt to shield me from her own burgeoning independence, had broken something inside me.

It had to be done. The thought was a dull ache, a constant thrum beneath the surface of my everyday interactions with her. Every shared glance, every casual touch, every late-night conversation on the rooftop overlooking the ink-black ocean now felt loaded, a performance of normalcy I could no longer sustain. My grandfather, bless his weary soul, was fading. His coughs echoed through the quiet house, each one a tiny hammer blow against the fragile edifice of our stability. He needed me. He *deserved* me. But Maya… Maya deserved the world. And London, with its bustling streets and endless possibilities, was her world.

So, I began to build the distance. It was a slow, deliberate erosion of the intimacy we’d so carefully cultivated. It started with small things, almost imperceptible shifts. I’d let her texts go unanswered for a little longer, my thumb hovering over the keyboard, rehearsing casual replies that felt hollow and false. When she’d suggest our usual Friday night movie marathon, I’d feign a headache, or claim I needed to check on Gramps, even when Gramps was sound asleep. The guilt gnawed at me, a constant companion, but the image of Maya, free and unbound, was a flickering candle in the encroaching darkness.
