The salt spray kissed my cheeks, a familiar sting that always brought me back to myself. It was the same wind that had whipped through my hair a thousand times as I sat here, perched on the weathered planks of the old pier, watching the grey Oakhaven sea churn. But today, it felt different. Today, the wind carried the ghost of a question, a silent echo of the words that had hung between us, heavy and fragile, like the mist that clung to the horizon.
Leo sat beside me, his shoulders hunched, his gaze fixed on the restless water. He hadn't spoken since we’d left the beach, since that moment where everything had shifted, where the unspoken had finally found its voice, however strained. The air between us was thick with the residue of tears and confessions, a potent cocktail of relief and regret.
"It was the right thing to do, wasn't it?" I whispered, the words barely audible above the sigh of the waves. I needed to hear him say it, even though I already knew the answer. We had danced around this for so long, this unspoken negotiation of our futures, and now, in the stark light of its resolution, it felt both inevitable and impossibly cruel.
