The musty scent of aging paper and forgotten dreams clung to the air in the archive, a familiar perfume to Wendy. She had spent hours here, sifting through brittle documents and dusty ledgers, her initial excitement slowly giving way to a gnawing frustration. The archivist, a woman named Eleanor with eyes that twinkled behind thick spectacles, had been patient, her knowledge vast, but the specific thread she sought, the vibrant crimson line connecting the Istre name to a king, remained elusive. Today, however, felt different. A subtle shift in the atmosphere, a whisper of possibility that had been absent in her previous visits.
Eleanor, with a gentle rustle of her cardigan, placed a thick, leather-bound volume on the table before Wendy. "This," she announced, her voice a soft murmur, "might be what you're looking for. It's an older registry, pre-dating many of the official heraldic records. More… anecdotal, you might say."
Wendy's heart gave a little lurch. Anecdotal. That felt closer to the faded sketch she’d found, the one that spoke of a time before meticulous record-keeping, a time of oral traditions and whispered histories. She ran a gloved finger over the worn cover, the embossed title barely visible: "Chronicles of the Lesser Nobility and Notable Families of the Western Marches."
