Chapter 15
Unbreakable Love
Their love is a force that cannot be taken away, fueling her day. She is more than her file; she has endured pain and will do it all again for them.
The quiet in the house was a heavy blanket, muffling the world outside and pressing down on her chest. It was a silence that tasted of dust and regret, a silence that echoed with the phantom sounds of laughter that had long since faded. She traced the faint outline of a handprint on the wall, a splash of purple paint that had defied the scrubbing of time and worry. Melodee’s hand. It felt impossibly small, impossibly hers. A desperate prayer, wordless and raw, unspooled in her heart: Do you remember me? Please, still remember me.
Last night, she had seen Eligah’s face, clear as day, etched into the canvas of her dreams. He was laughing, a bright, unrestrained sound, bathed in the warm glow of sunlight. Then, the abrupt chill of waking. The room, a canvas of grey, mirroring the landscape of her own soul. Another dawn, another battle to face.
“I blame myself,” the words were a low murmur, a confession whispered to the empty air. The wasted years stretched behind her like a desolate plain, littered with the wreckage of her choices. The demons, those relentless companions, clawed at her insides, their whispers amplified by the sting of her own tears. They said a new home was waiting for them, a safe harbor. Her porcelain doll, Melodee, and her brave Eligah. What was a grandma supposed to do when the world felt like it was tilting on its axis? The ache of missing them was a physical pain, a constant throb beneath her ribs.
