The quiet in the house was a thick blanket, woven from silence and the ghosts of laughter that no longer echoed. She traced the faint outline of Eligah’s handprint on the wall, a smudge of blue paint a testament to a time when the world felt solid, when her hands were steady enough to guide his. Melodee’s drawings, taped with the earnest enthusiasm of a child’s heart, still clung to the refrigerator, vibrant splashes of color against the muted backdrop of her present. Each one was a tiny, defiant flag, waving from a battlefield she felt she was losing. A cold dread, familiar as her own heartbeat, settled in her chest. Would they remember her? Careful words, delivered with practiced empathy, painted pictures of a new home, a fresh start for her children. “A new home’s waiting there for you,” the words echoed, each one a tiny shard of glass piercing her heart. Her porcelain doll, her beautiful Melodee, safe in someone else’s arms. What was a grandma supposed to do when the world had stolen her babies? The words “I miss you” were a prayer, a desperate plea sent out into the void.
