Crossroads of the Heart

The coffee shop, a familiar haven of worn leather and the comforting hiss of the espresso machine, had always been my sanctuary. Even now, weeks after the unexpected reunion, it felt like a stage set for a drama I hadn’t quite figured out how to play. Anna had insisted we meet, her eyes, usually so bright with mischief, held a thoughtful, almost serious glint. “You haven’t stopped talking about him,” she’d observed, stirring her latte with more vigor than necessary. “And I don’t mean in the ‘oh, look, my ex is suddenly a walking, talking ghost’ way. I mean, you’re *thinking* about him.”

She was right, of course. How could I not be? Seeing Liam again, after so long, after believing I’d finally tucked him away into the neat, categorized sections of my past, was like finding a forgotten, beloved book on a dusty shelf, its pages still holding the scent of a life I’d once lived. It wasn’t the gut-wrenching ache of loss that had defined those first few months. That had faded, replaced by a quiet understanding, a gentle acceptance. But this… this was different. It was a tremor, a subtle shift in the tectonic plates of my emotional landscape.
