Chapter 4

The Anchor's Counsel

Later that evening, Aria calls Anna, her oldest and dearest friend. Over steaming mugs of tea, she recounts the surreal encounter in the bookstore. Her voice trembles slightly as she describes Liam’s presence, the unexpected lack of pain, and the unsettling pull of old feelings. Anna listens with her characteristic calm, her brow furrowed in genuine concern. She offers no easy answers, no pronouncements, but her steady presence is an anchor. "It’s okay to feel whatever you’re feeling, Aria," Anna says softly. "Just be honest with yourself about it."

Instead, it had been like stumbling upon a forgotten photograph, a sudden jolt of recognition, a ghost of a smile, and then a quiet acknowledgement of a chapter closed. But the ghost, it seemed, had lingered, whispering possibilities into the silent spaces of my mind.

The doorbell chimed, a cheerful, insistent sound that cut through the rain’s drone. I padded to the door, a soft smile already forming. Anna. My anchor. My truest north.
