The air in Dr. Thorne’s study was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something metallic and sharp, like ozone after a lightning strike. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating rows upon rows of books that seemed to lean in, whispering secrets. I clutched the small, tarnished silver locket in my hand, its cool weight a familiar anchor against the rising tide of dread. It had been Maya’s grandmother’s, a seemingly insignificant trinket that had, inexplicably, reappeared on my doorstep this morning, perfectly intact, after it had been stolen from Maya’s apartment weeks ago. Another thread pulled taut in the increasingly suffocating tapestry of these impossible coincidences.

Dr. Thorne sat behind a massive oak desk, his face a landscape of fine wrinkles, his eyes like polished obsidian, reflecting the dim light without revealing anything. He hadn’t asked me how I’d found him, nor had he questioned the locket. He simply gestured to the worn leather armchair opposite him. “You’ve been searching, Alex,” he said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the floorboards. It wasn't a question.

“Searching for answers,” I corrected, my voice tighter than I intended. “For an explanation. For a way to make it stop.” I placed the locket on the desk, the faint click echoing in the unnatural silence. “This was Maya’s. It vanished. And now it’s back. Just like the misplaced keys that reappear in my pocket, the books that rearrange themselves on my shelves, the news articles that seem to predict my thoughts.” My hands trembled slightly as I gestured, and I forced them to still. “It’s not random, is it?”
