The dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the grimy panes of the antique shop, each one a tiny, ephemeral world. It was the kind of place that smelled of forgotten lives and stories whispered by decaying paper. I’d been drawn here by a desperate, gnawing intuition, a feeling that the answer, or at least a piece of it, lay buried amongst the detritus of other people’s histories. Maya, bless her pragmatic heart, had reluctantly agreed to accompany me, her usual bright demeanor dimmed by a growing unease that mirrored my own.
“Are you sure about this, Alex?” she’d asked, her voice barely a murmur as she navigated a precarious stack of leather-bound tomes. “It just feels… like a wild goose chase.”
“I don’t know, May,” I’d admitted, my fingers tracing the faded gilt on a spine that promised forgotten lore. “But the patterns are too insistent. They’re not random. They feel… woven. Like someone’s pulling the threads.”
