The chipped mug felt cool against my palms, a stark contrast to the heat prickling my skin. Maya’s laughter, usually a bright melody, had a brittle edge to it tonight, like thin ice threatening to crack. We were at our usual haunt, ‘The Dusty Quill,’ a place that smelled of old paper and forgotten stories, a fitting backdrop for the unraveling narrative of my life. But tonight, the comfort of familiarity offered no solace. The air felt thick, charged with an unseen current that had been growing stronger with each passing day.

“Seriously, Alex,” Maya said, pushing a stray strand of dark hair behind her ear, her eyes, usually so steady, flickered with a nervous energy I hadn’t seen before. “A pigeon wearing a tiny bowler hat? You’re sure you didn’t just… dream it?”

I met her gaze, my own a mirror of her unease, though I fought to keep it steady. “Maya, I’ve told you. It wasn’t a dream. It was there. On the windowsill. It tilted its head. And then it flew away.” I traced the rim of my mug, the ceramic rough beneath my fingertip. The memory was sharp, unnervingly clear. The miniature hat, perched jauntily on its feathered head, the intelligent gleam in its beady eyes. It was too absurd, too vivid to be mere fancy.
