The air in the grand drawing-room, once thick with the scent of old money and polished mahogany, now crackled with a raw, untamed tension. Eleanor Vance’s meticulously orchestrated disappearance had not brought the catharsis she’d perhaps intended, but rather a volatile eruption of long-suppressed resentments and gnawing suspicions. The carefully constructed facade of the Vance family, so solid and unyielding to the outside world, had splintered, revealing the fault lines beneath.
Clara, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white, watched her brother Arthur pace the Persian rug like a caged lion. His face, usually a mask of controlled ambition, was now contorted with a fury that was both terrifying and, to Clara, strangely pathetic. He had been the first to dismiss her theories, the first to demand a police investigation, the first to insist on the narrative of a beloved matriarch tragically taken. Now, the truth, or at least the beginning of it, lay scattered between them like shards of broken glass.
"You knew," Arthur’s voice was a low growl, directed at Clara, but his eyes darted towards James, who stood by the fireplace, arms crossed, an unnerving calm about him. "You knew she was planning this. This... charade."
