The gentle hum of the washing machine was a familiar lullaby, a steady rhythm that had always soothed Jessica’s anxieties. Today, however, it felt like a distant thrumming beneath a much louder, internal tremor. She folded a soft, worn t-shirt, the fabric cool against her fingertips, and paused. The ‘now,’ that precious, fleeting moment she’d been consciously cultivating, felt more like a tightrope, each step requiring immense concentration lest she teeter and fall into the abyss of ‘what ifs.’

Her mother, Pamela, sat across the kitchen table, a half-finished cup of tea growing cold beside her. The silence between them wasn't the comfortable, companionable kind, but a heavy, expectant quiet, punctuated only by the occasional clink of Jessica’s spoon against her mug. Jessica had told her. The words, once uttered, had hung in the air like fragile ornaments, threatening to shatter. Pamela’s initial reaction had been a controlled storm – a swift, sharp intake of breath, a tightening around her eyes, followed by a fierce, almost protective hug. Now, days later, the raw emotion had settled into a deep, thoughtful concern.

“Did you… did you speak to Dr. Rains again?” Pamela asked, her voice soft, laced with an inquiry that felt like a plea.
