The afternoon sun, a pale imitation of its summer glory, cast long, distorted shadows across the canvases that lined the walls – a silent testament to her inner turmoil. Detective Miles sat opposite her, his gaze steady, patient, a stark contrast to the frantic energy that had been buzzing beneath Elara’s skin for days. Beside him, a figure she hadn’t seen in years, whose presence felt both alien and achingly familiar, occupied the space like a phantom. His name, spoken softly by Miles, was a ghost from a life Elara had tried so desperately to bury.

“Elara,” Detective Miles began, his voice a low rumble that somehow soothed the jagged edges of her anxiety, “we’ve been talking to Arthur. He’s agreed to tell us what happened. And Arthur,” he turned to the man beside him, a man whose weathered face held a lifetime of unspoken regrets, “has agreed to tell you, too.”

Arthur. The name echoed in the cavern of Elara’s memory, a whisper from a time when laughter and scraped knees were the currency of their days. He was Liam’s older cousin, a constant, looming presence in their childhood, always on the periphery of their adventures. Now, he sat before her, his hands clasped tightly, his eyes fixed on some distant point beyond the studio walls.
