The quiet hum of the refrigerator was a symphony compared to the frantic drumming in my chest. I stood in the hallway, my back pressed against the cool plaster, trying to will my heart back into a normal rhythm. It was ridiculous. I lived with Choi San. Choi San. The name still felt like a delicious secret, a whispered incantation that could conjure a thousand dreams. And now, he was just… down the hall. Probably eating cereal. Or brushing his teeth. Or existing in the same air molecules as me.
My reflection in the darkened living room window was a stranger. Dark brown hair, a little messy from where I’d been running my hands through it, eyes wide and a little wild. My cheeks felt flushed, and I knew, with a certainty that made my stomach flip, that it wasn’t just the lingering excitement of having him so close. It was something else. Something deeper, and infinitely more terrifying.

But now, they were blurring, the edges softening, the distinction between “fan” and “girl” dissolving like sugar in hot tea.
