The air in our apartment felt thicker, charged with something new, something fragile and potent. Chapter 7 had been a whirlwind of confession and a silent, terrifying acknowledgment. San had held me, his arms a solid anchor against the churning sea of my anxieties. The age gap, that looming shadow, had receded, not vanished, but certainly dimmed in the face of his declared feelings. He’d looked at me, his dark eyes holding a depth I’d only ever glimpsed on stage, and whispered that he didn't care. It was a promise, a vow, and it had sent shivers down my spine that had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with pure, unadulterated joy.

But the world outside our little haven wasn’t so easily swayed. The whispers, as San had predicted, had started. Not loud shouts, not yet, but insidious murmurs that slithered through the edges of our lives. Manager Min, bless his perpetually stressed heart, was a storm cloud waiting to burst. He’d called San into his office for a ‘routine check-in’ that lasted an eternity. I’d paced our living room, replaying every casual touch, every lingering glance, every late-night conversation, wondering if I’d already done something wrong.

When San finally returned, his shoulders were tight, his jaw set. He didn’t speak, just walked past me, heading straight for the bedroom. I hesitated, then followed, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. He was sitting on the edge of the bed, staring at his hands.
