Chapter 4
My Voice, His Instrument
The investigation turns deeply personal. Corbin discovers his own voice has been sampled, becoming part of the killer's macabre 'composition.' The hunter is now the prey, trapped in a deadly sonic game.
The precinct buzzed with the usual low hum of desperation and stale coffee, a sound I usually found comforting in its predictability. Not today. Today, the air felt thick, charged with something I couldn't quite place. It was the kind of quiet that precedes a scream. I’d spent the last three days wading through Elias Thorne’s meticulously crafted silence, and the echo of his final moments was starting to feel like a phantom limb, a constant, unnerving ache. The recording, a pristine loop of pure terror, played on repeat in my head, each gasp, each choked whisper a tiny shard of glass under my skin.
I’d gone over it a hundred times. The studio, a fortress of soundproofing, meticulously designed to keep the outside world out, had become Thorne’s tomb. No forced entry, no signs of struggle, just him and his equipment, and that chilling testament to his final seconds. The locked door, the supposedly impenetrable walls, the utter lack of any physical evidence beyond his own dying voice – it was a puzzle designed to break a man. And it was working.
My desk was a graveyard of discarded theories. Fingerprints that led nowhere, witness statements that evaporated under scrutiny, security footage that showed nothing but empty corridors. It was as if the killer had been a ghost, a disembodied presence that moved through Thorne’s life and left only sound in its wake. Sound. That was the key, wasn't it? Thorne’s profession, his obsession. And now, it seemed, his killer’s weapon.
