The air in the hidden grove hung thick and still, heavy with the scent of damp earth and the metallic tang of something ancient. Sunlight, filtered through a canopy of leaves the color of emeralds and jade, dappled the moss-covered stones where Kael knelt. Lyra stood before him, her presence a quiet storm, her eyes, the color of a twilight sky, fixed on his with an intensity that made the hairs on his arms prickle.

“The whispers you hear, Kael,” Lyra began, her voice a low hum that resonated in the stillness, “are the threads of magic that weave through this world. They are not to be commanded, but understood. Coaxed. Befriended.”

Kael nodded, his own breath catching in his throat. The whispers were a constant companion now, a buzzing symphony just beneath the surface of his hearing, sometimes coalescing into distinct murmurs, other times a chaotic cacophony. He’d tried to grasp them, to force them into submission, but they were like smoke, slipping through his fingers.
