The desert wind, a relentless sculptor of sand and spirit, whipped around Kael as he trained. Each gust felt like a taunt, a reminder of the vastness he still had to conquer, both within himself and in the world. Lyra watched from the shade of a crumbling ruin, her gaze a mixture of pride and a subtle, persistent worry that Kael couldn’t quite decipher. His control over the elemental energies was growing, the earth responding to his will with a newfound obedience. He could summon walls of stone, coax vibrant life from barren soil, and even command the very air to carry his whispers across impossible distances. Yet, the whispers in his own mind, the fragmented echoes of his past life, remained as elusive as ever, a constant, nagging hum beneath the surface of his burgeoning power.
"You are strong, Kael," Lyra’s voice, as smooth and ancient as river stones, cut through the wind. "Stronger than you know."
Kael lowered his hands, the summoned earth settling back into the dunes. "But not strong enough, Lyra. Not yet." He thought of Valerius, of the shadow that stretched across the kingdom, a palpable weight pressing down on every breath of freedom. He had glimpsed the tyrant’s reach in the hushed fear of the villagers, in the guarded eyes of the merchants, and in the grim faces of those who had lost everything.
