Chapter 15: The Deletion
Anonymous Author and the Weaver hide from the guard while the database deletion progresses. The Weaver uses a radio broadcast to distract the guard. The deletion completes at 100%, but they must flee as the guard returns. They escape the building but realize they left the laptop behind. The Archivist calls to warn that the Bureau is raiding the museum.
The footsteps on the basement stairs were deliberate, unhurried. Each creak of the old wooden treads sent a jolt through Anonymous Author's chest. The Weaver had already grabbed the laptop, its screen still showing the progress bar at 34%. She looked at Anonymous Author, her eyes wide but steady.
"We need to hide," she whispered.
They slipped behind a tall metal shelving unit stacked with boxes of bound ledgers. The space between the shelf and the wall was narrow, just enough for two people to crouch. Anonymous Author held their breath, pressing against the cold concrete. The Weaver clutched the laptop, its fan still humming. She fumbled in her bag and pulled out a small transistor radio, turning the volume knob to the lowest setting. A faint crackle of static emerged.
