It wasn't the furious downpour of that night, but a persistent, almost melancholic drizzle that softened the edges of the city, smearing the garish neon signs into impressionistic daubs of light. The air, thick with the scent of damp earth and exhaust fumes, felt like a familiar, worn blanket. Jemim found himself walking the same route, the familiar stretch of Haile Selassie Avenue a canvas of shimmering asphalt reflecting the same chaotic mosaic of lights.

His thumb hovered over his phone, the urge to scroll through endless feeds a dull ache. The last campus shuttle was long gone, a predictable rhythm of his post-semester life. But tonight, the walk home felt different, charged with a subtle, almost unbearable nostalgia. He pulled his jacket tighter, the cool air a stark contrast to the warmth that had settled in his chest during that brief, unexpected connection.

He paused, almost instinctively, as he approached the 24-hour convenience store. Its wide, glowing plastic awning spilled a harsh square of fluorescent light onto the wet pavement, a beacon in the encroaching twilight. For a fleeting moment, the scene replayed in his mind with vivid, almost painful clarity: the frantic clatter of Maya’s architectural model, the gust of wind, his own sudden, unthinking leap to save it. He could almost feel the smooth, cool cardboard in his hands again, the initial shock of her wide, exhausted eyes.
