The air in the humanities block always felt thicker, a hushed reverence clinging to the walls that spoke of late-night study sessions and the ghosts of countless dissertations. It was a Thursday, two weeks after the last time I’d dared to venture near the media center, and the lingering scent of old paper and brewing coffee was a familiar, if melancholic, perfume. I was heading back from a particularly grueling seminar on post-modernist literature, the kind that left your brain feeling like a deflated balloon, when my path inevitably curved towards the architecture department. It was a route I’d tried to avoid, a subconscious magnetic pull that drew me towards a place that held a phantom echo of her.

The corridor leading to the studios was a gallery of student work. Models perched precariously on shelves, sketches pinned to every available surface, and full-scale mock-ups of doorways and windows that made you feel like you were walking through a half-finished building. It was a testament to Maya’s world, a world of sharp lines and soaring ambitions, of projects that demanded every ounce of your being. I pictured her, hunched over a drafting table, surrounded by a beautiful, chaotic storm of cardboard, glue, and technical pens. Her dark hair, probably loose and falling into her eyes, her brow furrowed in concentration, a smudge of charcoal on her cheek. Did she ever pause, I wondered, to think of the stranger who, for a brief, rain-soaked moment, had become an unlikely hero in her architectural narrative?
