The familiar rumble of the commuter vehicle was a sound that had once been a simple necessity, a mundane part of the urban symphony that underscored my daily existence. Now, it was a ghost. The same route, the same humming engine that had vibrated with a nascent connection just weeks ago, now seemed to carry a melancholic weight, a resonant echo of what might have been. I found myself on it again, the cold evening air seeping through the slight gaps in the doors, a stark contrast to the warmth that had enveloped Maya and me that rainy Tuesday.

Maya’s laugh, sharp and bright against the drumming rain. The way her eyes had lit up when I’d caught her architectural model. Her infectious, slightly chaotic energy that had, for a few fleeting minutes, felt like a perfect counterpoint to my own more reserved nature. It was a stark contrast to the predictable, solitary journeys I’d taken since then.
