The worn metal of the earphones’ charging case felt oddly familiar in my palm, a smooth, cool weight against my skin. It had been weeks since I’d left it with the student announcer, weeks since I’d accepted the quiet finality of that empty desk. The semester had taken its familiar, relentless course, a blur of lectures and late-night study sessions, all punctuated by the monotonous rhythm of my commute. It was a story I’d tucked away, a pleasant anomaly in the predictable narrative of my life.
