You checked the studio on Monday afternoon. Nothing. The student announcer, a guy with perpetually tired eyes and a kind smile, just offered a sympathetic shake of his head. "Not yet, man. She hasn't been back." You’d felt a flicker of hope when you’d first walked in, a foolish, persistent ember that refused to be extinguished. But now, standing there, the air thick with the scent of old paper and cheap coffee, that flicker finally died. It was a slow, agonizing death, punctuated by a week of dashed expectations. When he told her that the guy with the elite reflexes, the emergency cardboard logistics expert, had been looking for her, her immediate reaction was a flurry of motion. She’d grabbed a marker, a scrap piece of paper that looked suspiciously like a discarded flyer, and scribbled down her contact details. A quick, breathless note, he remembered, full of apologies and thanks.
