Leo slumped onto the bottom step of the stairwell, the chipped concrete cool against his worn jeans. The flyer for the talent show, crumpled in his fist, felt heavier than a brick. A brand-new bicycle. It shimmered in his mind’s eye, ruby red and gleaming, its bell a cheerful ding-dong that promised freedom and wind in his hair. But the unicycle incident, followed by the dog-chasing-its-own-tail fiasco, had thoroughly extinguished any flicker of hope. He was a disaster, not a talent. A joke, not a winner.

Maya found him there, her bright eyes scanning his dejected face. She plopped down beside him, her own flyer spread out on her lap. "Still thinking about that bike?" she asked softly.

Leo just grunted, kicking at a loose pebble. "What's the point, Maya? I can't even stand on a wobbly wheel without falling over, and Buster almost ate my shoe trying to catch a phantom squirrel I imagined." He tossed the crumpled flyer onto the grimy landing. "I'm not cut out for this. I should just… go back to being me. The kid who can’t even afford a decent bike." The words tasted bitter, a familiar, unwelcome tang.
