The scent of rain-dampened earth and the subtle, sweet perfume of night-blooming jasmine had always been Lyra’s lullaby. Tonight, however, a discordant note thrummed beneath the familiar symphony of the estate. Elara, her hand resting on Lyra’s arm, felt it too – a tremor in the air, a prickle of unease that had settled over the grand house like a shroud. The library, usually a sanctuary of quiet contemplation, now felt charged with an unseen tension. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the tall, arched windows, each one seeming to carry a sliver of foreboding.

“Are you certain you heard something, Lyra?” Elara’s voice was a low murmur, laced with a protectiveness that had become as natural to her as breathing. She held a heavy, leather-bound tome, its pages filled with the estate’s lineage, open on her lap, but her gaze was fixed on Lyra, who stood by the window, her silhouette a study in quiet vigilance.

Lyra turned, her eyes, pools of deep amber, reflecting the faint moonlight. “It was a sound, Elara. Not of the wind, nor of the animals. Something… deliberate.” She paused, her brow furrowed. “Like a heavy boot on the gravel path, much too late for any visitor.”
