The air in the small, sterile room was thick with a silence that pressed in on him, a silence punctuated only by the ragged sound of his own breathing. Andrew lay on the narrow cot, his body a battlefield where a war of chemical withdrawal raged. Every muscle screamed, a symphony of aches and tremors that threatened to pull him back under, back to the familiar, numbing embrace of the needle. But this time, there was a difference. This time, the fight felt… earned.

Days bled into nights, marked not by the rising and setting of the sun, but by the ebb and flow of the sickness. The nausea was a constant companion, a churning storm in his gut. Sweats drenched his thin shirt, only for him to be gripped by a bone-chilling cold that made his teeth chatter uncontrollably. Hallucinations flickered at the edges of his vision, phantom figures lurking in the dim corners of the room, whispers that coiled around his thoughts like serpents. He saw the faces of those he’d wronged, the opportunities he’d squandered, the reflection of a man he barely recognized.

Tasha was his anchor in this tempest. She’d found this place, a small, nondescript clinic on the outskirts of a town he’d barely registered passing through on his endless journeys. Her eyes, usually so full of a vibrant warmth, were etched with a weary concern, but her hands, when they smoothed his feverish brow or held his trembling ones, were a steady, unwavering force. She spoke in soft, encouraging tones, her voice a balm to his raw nerves. "Just breathe, Andrew," she'd murmur, her fingers tracing the veins that pulsed with a frantic rhythm beneath his skin. "One breath at a time. One minute at a time."
