The fluorescent hum of the motel room was a dull throb against Andrew’s temples, a stark contrast to the cacophony of the streets he’d known for so long. Beside him, Tasha slept, her breath a soft rhythm that anchored him to the present, to a reality that felt both fragile and profoundly real. He’d watched her fade, a slow, agonizing process that had carved a hollow space in his young heart. The days that followed blurred into a relentless cycle of hunger and cold, of the gnawing emptiness that settled deep in his gut. Hallways became his bedroom, the concrete floor a hard mattress. He’d learned to become invisible, to blend into the shadows, to survive on scraps and the kindness of strangers who were often as desperate as he was.
