Chapter 14
The Weight of Addiction
Witnessing the struggle. Andrew encounters individuals still trapped in the cycle of addiction, perhaps a cautionary tale like a fellow addict, reinforcing the importance of his mission.
The city exhaled a damp, gritty breath, a familiar scent that clung to Andrew like a second skin. It was the smell of exhaust fumes, stale urine, and something indefinable, something that spoke of desperation and forgotten dreams. He’d walked these streets for years, a ghost in his own life, but lately, the ghosts had begun to acquire faces, familiar ones etched with the same hollowed-out hunger he knew so well. He was on his way to meet Tasha, but the path took him through a familiar stretch of Jackson Ward, a place that still held him in its spectral grip.
He saw him first from a distance, a hunched figure by a boarded-up storefront, his silhouette a caricature of surrender. As Andrew drew closer, the details sharpened. The frayed edges of a once-familiar jacket, the way he cradled a chipped Styrofoam cup like a sacred chalice, the almost imperceptible tremor in his hands. It was Marcus. He hadn't seen Marcus in what felt like a lifetime, not since those early days on the streets, before the heroin had truly taken hold, before the world had shrunk to the size of a needle’s glint.
Andrew hesitated, a knot tightening in his gut. The instinct to turn away, to pretend he hadn’t seen, warred with something deeper, a residue of shared misery, a flicker of the boy he once was, who had known this same gnawing emptiness. He took a breath, the city air heavy in his lungs, and walked towards him.
