Chapter 10
Building the Foundation
Laying the groundwork. The initial challenges of establishing a men's home emerge. Securing a location, gathering resources, and navigating the complexities of non-profit work.
The air in the small, rented office hummed with a nervous energy, a stark contrast to the hushed hallways and cold concrete that had been his world for so long. Andrew, or just ‘Dre as Tasha affectionately called him, traced the rim of a chipped coffee mug, the lukewarm liquid doing little to warm the chill that still settled deep in his bones. Building a men’s home, a sanctuary for those lost in the same dark woods he’d navigated, was no longer just a dream whispered in the quiet moments with Tasha; it was a tangible, albeit daunting, reality. Now, the architecture was far more complex, requiring permits and approvals that felt as foreign as a language he’d never heard. “I know, Tash. It’s… a lot.” He ran a hand over his close-cropped hair, the calluses on his fingertips a constant reminder of the manual labor that had once been his lifeblood, and now, perhaps, his salvation.
